A Visit to the Family Farm
By Shay, YES Abroad 2019-2020, Turkey
A highlight of mine was a visit to my host family’s farm. We left early on Sunday morning after a big delicious Turkish breakfast. Before heading to the farm, we stopped by a Pazar and bought some vegetables as well as some onion buds for planting. Arriving at the farm, we greeted and fed the farm dogs, Kiraz and Asid, and opened the gates for the chickens to roam. I used a hoe to help plow a section of the land and plant the onions.
Later, when my host cousins and uncle arrived at the farm, my host brother, two younger cousins, and I played soccer in a nearby field. That evening, we all came together and had a barbecue where we ate Köfte, şiş kebap, and various other meats and treats as the sun went down. It was a fun and meaningful experience that day, and learned a lot about what it means to be a member of this host family.
