American Abroad Student of the Month: December 2017

Christina On Tv

Christina Carrington, a Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Abroad Program (YES Abroad) participant is the U.S. Department of State’s December 2017 American Abroad Student of the Month.  From Kansas and a graduate of Washburn Rural High School, Christina is currently studying in Skopje, Macedonia.

Christina has demonstrated a number of qualities that make her an exemplary exchange student. First, she is enthusiastic about learning Macedonian culture and making Macedonian friends. She uses the language whenever possible and motivates and encourages other YES Abroad participants to do so as well. She immediately bonded with her host family and, careful to make sure it lasts, she has worked to develop a strong and amazing connection with them in the short time she’s been on program.

Christina has committed to success within her host school with equal vigor.  She attends the Macedonian and English language International Baccalaureate (IB) program at public school Gymnasium Josip Broz Tito. She offers her assistance to other students in the class when needed, which her teachers have greatly appreciated.

Lastly, Christina is unflagging in her appreciation and dedication to the values of the YES Abroad program.  She never misses an opportunity to engage with her community and to share American culture. She has been active with the YES Alumni Association in Skopje, attending monthly meetings and participating in projects or volunteering for activities that the alumni association organizes. She even helped with recruitment for YES participants this fall.  Christina, along with YES staff, was a guest on Macedonia in the Morning, a live national television morning show. The group went on the show to promote YES and YES Abroad. Christina shared about her exchange experience, her host family, host school, and how she likes Macedonia.

Through her efforts Christina has enthusiastically laid the groundwork for a successful YES Abroad year.  Though only in Macedonia for four months, she’s truly had some life-changing experience and is excited for what more the year may bring.

Congratulations, Christina!
