Five on Five
In honor of International Education Week, YES Abroad students Anna Wright, Emma Goldrick, Helena Ratte, Katie Wells (above, presenting on the Great Northwest) and Savannah Wooten, currently studying abroad in Bosnia and Herzegovina, presented their country, the United States of America, to Access students at the Gazi Husrev-bey Madrasa in Sarajevo.
The five YES Abroad students originating from various parts of the U.S. divided their presentation into five regions: the Great Northwest, the Midwest, the Northeast, the Southeast and the Southwest and presented their unique customs and cultures, food and various dialects spoken to the delight of audience members. Their audience consisted of 38 Madrasa students, all participants of the English Access Microscholarship Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, which provides a foundation of English language skills to talented high school students from disadvantaged sectors through after school classes and intensive summer sessions.
Three YES program alumni, Nino Lojpur (Alumni Coordinator for Bosnia and Herzegovina), Sanda Hanjalic '10, and Nejra Rizvanovic '10, also visited the Madrasa and spoke to the Access students about their own experiences while studying abroad in the United States. The Alumni spoke about their U.S. host communities, what they studied in high school while there, differences and similarities in American and Bosnian cultures and what they do now as active YES alumni to better their local communities.
