March 2014 YES Abroad Student of the Month

Emma is actively involved in her host family life and has made significant progress with learning the difficult Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian language in large part due to daily conversations with her host parents.  She is doing well academically as an IB student at her local school, “Druga Gimnazija,” which, we understand, is incredibly challenging.

Emma has shown exemplary behavior, courtesy, and a positive demeanor towards others and is active in the local community.  She has volunteered over 50 hours teaching English to elementary school children at an after-school program.  She has also been tutoring English to a student at the Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired Children and Youth and has begun volunteering at the Center for Senior Healthy Living all in Sarajevo.  In addition, Emma works with peers at another high school in Sarajevo “Peta Gimnazija” where she assists members of the English Club with preparations for their annual youth English competitions.

For International Education Week, Emma assisted in organizing a presentation on Thanksgiving at the “Hamdija Kreševljaković” elementary school where, together with the other YES Abroad program participants, Emma showed the children how to make hand turkeys and a paper chain on which each child wrote notes of gratitude. Some of her blog entries can be found on the YES abroad website.
