YES Abroad Alumna Making a Difference in International Development
YES Abroad Alumna, 2011-2012 Meena Oberdick is a rising junior at Columbia University studying to receive her bachelor’s degree in International Relations and History. After graduation, she plans to pursue a degree in international law, with the goal of ultimately working within the sphere of international development or human rights law. This summer, Meena plans to further her understanding of some of the prevailing challenges hampering development and threatening the dignity and well-being of many individuals and communities by working as a research intern in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia at the Ethiopian-based NGO Africa Humanitarian Action (AHA).
As a close partner of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and an affiliate of the African Union, AHA is an organization that provides humanitarian assistance to refugees, internally displaced persons, and distressed communities across Africa. Founded by Dr. Dawit Zawde in response to the Rwandan genocide of 1994, the number of countries in which AHA operates has steadily expanded since its foundation, reaching a total of seventeen countries as of 2014. Since its foundation, AHA has worked to bring skills and education to individuals and communities in need so that they may begin to develop sustainable solutions to a myriad of challenges, from unemployment to the spread of HIV/AIDS.
