Crip Camp Workshop - Registration Open

In honor of the Americans with Disabilities Act 30th Anniversary, the YES program is hosting a series of virtual events centered around Netflix's Crip Camp, produced by the Obama’s Higher Ground Production and winner of the 2020 Audience Award at Sundance. The film narrates the story of youth at a disability camp who became activists for the disability rights movement and fought for accessibility legislation. Join a week of virtual events centered around the film that include a film discussion, keynote speaker panel, and fireside chats from August 17-21. This workshop is free and open to the public, and no application is necessary. We especially invite everyone who is interested in disability rights, accessibility, inclusivity, and cultural exchange to attend!

Crip Camp Cinema Circle, Monday, August 17 at 12pm - 1pm ET 

Watch the film Crip Camp in advance of this session - we will share a link with free access to the film - and join this session for a community discussion about the message of the film, specific scenes, reclaiming and celebrating your identity, telling your story, and discovering the power of community. Be prepared to discuss disability rights in the U.S. and abroad. Discussions will take place in smaller breakout rooms where you will be able to connect with others from the international exchange community for a guided discussion on the film.


Keynote Speaker Panel, Tuesday, August 18 at 1pm - 2:30pm ET

Don't miss this exciting opportunity to attend a session with one of the most recognized leaders in disability advocacy and a key figure in the film Crip Camp, Judy Heumann. Fellow disability rights advocate and Crip Camp Impact Producer, Andraéa LaVant, will join Judy for a robust discussion about advocating for persons with disabilities, the power of community, and the role that international exchanges can have in global disability rights and advocacy. You will have the opportunity to submit questions in advance. You will not want to miss out on this conversation with influential civil rights leaders and change makers in our global society.

The panel will be moderated by MIUSA.

Judy Heumann is an American disability rights activist. She is recognized internationally as a leader in the disability community. Judy is a lifelong civil rights advocate for people with disabilities and one of the key figures in passing the ADA and featured strongly in Crip Camp. Her work with governments and NGOs since the 1970s has contributed greatly to the development of human rights legislation and policy benefiting disabled people. Her work in the World Bank and the US.. State Department, has led to mainstreaming of disability rights into international development cooperation Judy has contributed greatly to the extension of the international reach of the independent

Through her company she teaches organization how to include disability in their company's programs and campaigns. As a communications consultant and inclusion specialist, Andraéa has over a decade of experience working with programs that support youth and adults with disabilities and other underserved populations. Her professional roles and personal advocacy have presented her with a variety of notable opportunities to share messages and prompt change for people with disabilities across the globe.


Self-Advocacy; Facilitated by Andraéa LaVant, Wednesday, August 19 at 1pm - 2pm ET

Join this fireside chat (a more intimate discussion where all attendees have access to their microphones and cameras to engage and interact with one another and facilitators) about self-advocacy with Andraéa LaVant, a disability rights and justice advocacy expert. Andraéa will lead a discussion on communicating with different stakeholders to advocate for yourself by knowing and recognizing your needs.

Crip Camp and My Community; Facilitated by JoEllen Delamatta, Thursday, August 20 at 12pm - 1pm ET

Join an exciting session led by iEARN educator JoEllen Delamatta. This session, which is based on the iEARN framework, will guide you to take a critical look at your own society, consider disability rights in your community and country,  and connect with your peers over similarities and differences.  Participants will connect with other youth about the challenges and issues facing the disability community and draw similarities between scenes in Crip Camp and their own societies. All attendees will have access to their microphones and cameras to engage and interact with one another and facilitators. For this particular session we will provide prompts and guiding questions in advance about disability rights in your own community.

JoEllen Delamatta is a seasoned language and literacy teacher both in North America and Europe. She has been an iEARN facilitator and collaborative educator since 2016, and uses project based learning to incorporate the SDGs using virtual exchange platforms for greater authenticity with North Africa, France and the USA.


Miusa LogoGlobal Disability Rights; Facilitated by MIUSA, Friday, August 21 at 12pm-1pm ET

How can we create stronger communities by strengthening the rights of people with disabilities? MIUSA, a YES and FLEX implementing partner, will facilitate a discussion about the critical role people with disabilities play in implementing, enforcing and educating the public about disability rights laws. Participants in this session will reflect on how conversations among a group of passionate youth in Crip Camp began a grassroots movement for change, and will consider: How can FLEX and YES alumni with and without disabilities draw on their international exchange experience to start community discussions on disability rights? All attendees will have access to their cameras and microphones during this session for maximum engagement.
